Hall of Fame: Eamonn Largey

Inducted to the John McCredy McAlery Hall of Fame in May 2019, Eamonn Largey scored 13 goals in 318 appearances over 10 seasons at Solitude.

Originally signed from Distillery as a left winger, he quickly settled into a new role in the back four and it was noted that “his quick breaks from defence [were] a distinctive feature of the Reds’ playing style”, which likewise endeared him to supporters from the early days of his time at the Club.

Of the 1979 Irish Cup winning squad, only captain Walter Mills served Cliftonville longer than Largey, who played in 45 of the team’s 47 fixtures in that iconic campaign – during which his only appearance on the scoresheet came when he netted an own goal in a 6-1 friendly defeat by a PFA select side!

Part of the first Reds line-up to play in Europe when French giants FC Nantes Atlantique visited for a Cup Winners’ Cup clash a few months after that famous Windsor Park victory over Portadown, Eamonn has remained a regular at Solitude long after his playing days ended and remains a hugely respected and popular figure among Club officials and fans, who were delighted to welcome his worthy addition to the Hall of Fame.
